Fort Smith postal facility to move to Fayetteville

The U.S. Postal Service says work done at a mail processing and distribution center in Fort Smith will be moved to Fayetteville.

The postal service announced the move Thursday with Arkansas District Manager David Camp saying the transition is expected to be complete by October.

The decision comes after a study and public meetings to get residents’ input.

Operations and support district manager Stan Sowell said during a Feb. 24 public meeting in Fort Smith that the move would result in the loss of about 35 jobs in Fort Smith.

Camp said the move is the result of a 20 percent decline in mail volume since 2007 and the resulting need to reduce manpower devoted to processing.
