Digital age turns film photography into fine art

At best, there were 36 opportunities to get the perfect photo, observes freelance writer Sandra Cox in Tuesday’s Style section. It could be the sunset over the Grand Canyon, a daughter’s walk down the aisle or a handshake with the president. You discriminately decided what to shoot because your options were limited with a 36-exposure roll of film.

Digital cameras, however, offer infinite opportunities. Keep shooting, and maybe one of them will turn out decent. If not, then, hey, that’s what the delete button is for, right? It didn’t cost anything but the energy from the battery.

In this booming technological age, digital cameras are everywhere. It’s rare to find a cell phone without one, and it would be unheard of not to have one on a smart phone. Now, instead of film photography being one of life’s staples, for the few that persevere, it has now been elevated to something else: fine art.
