Gentry grocery closes 2 months after Walmart opens

— Two months after Wal-Mart Stores Inc. opened a small-format experimental store in Gentry, the city’s other grocery store is closing.

Fort Smith television station KFSM reports that Marvin’s is having a 30 percent off sale in advance of closing its doors.

Wal-Mart opened the Walmart Express store in June, around the time of its annual meeting. The miniature Walmart is being developed as part of the company’s strategy to expand in smaller communities. The company is also using other types of small-format stores in urban areas.

Another Walmart Express opened in Prairie Grove and another is to open in Gravette.

The stores average about 15,000 square feet and carry fresh food and a mix of general merchandise.
