'Young Adult' in the spotlight

By The Arkansas Democrat-Gazette

— In this week’s MovieStyle, our critic Philip Martin takes a long hard look at Jason (Up in the Air, Juno) Reitman’s highly anticipated Young Adult and finds it pretty average stuff. But Charlize Theron’s lead performance is very good — maybe as good as Ellen Barkin’s portrait of a woman on the verge of a nervous breakdown in the surprisingly affecting Another Happy Day, (which, like Young Adult, was directed by a Hollywood princeling, Barry Levinson’s son, Sam Levinson; Jason Reitman is the son of Ivan Reitman, who produced and directed Ghostbusters).

Martin was not so happy about Abe Sylvia’s Dirty Girl, but apparently Mission: Impossible: Ghost Protocol — which opens in IMAX theaters Friday — elsewhere on Dec. 21, is likely the best of the series. And Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Chance misses the chance to be more than more of the same.
