A Rogers woman was sentenced to five years probation and 150 hours of community service this morning for killing her husband.
Myrtle Walter, 79, of Rogers pleaded guilty to manslaughter, a Class C felony, which is punishable with a prison sentence ranging from 3 to 10 years, a fine up to $10,000 or both.
Circuit Judge Jon Comstock also had the option to impose an alternative sentence.
Walter was originally charged with capital murder and faced life imprisonment if convicted. Prosecutors reduced the charge to manslaughter.
Walter's attorney W.H. Taylor presented evidence and testimony that documented years of abuse Walter endured from her husband.
Walter was arrested on Oct. 4, 2008. She told police she shot and killed her 74-year-old husband, Paul, while he slept in the bedroom of their residence at 1105 S. 12th St., according to court documents.
