— Dillard's reported Thursday that its sales in December were up 6 percent from the same period in 2009.

The Arkansas-based retailer said in a statement that four weeks of sales ending Jan. 1, 2011 totaled $1,068,736,000, up from $1,005,985,000 during the same period a year ago. Comparable store sales increased 7 percent.

The company also saw a 2 percent increase in total sales and a 3 percent increase in comparable store sales for the 48-week period ending Jan. 1. Total sales for that period were about $5.64 billion, up from $5.54 billion in 2009.

The December sales were above average in the eastern region, in line with expectations in the central region and below trend in the western region, the company said. Dillard's has stores in 29 states.

Shoes sold more than expected while cosmetics were significantly below trend during the December period, the company said.
