Three teachers in the central Arkansas area were awarded classroom grants by the Arkansas State Teachers Association.
Sharon Boyd, a teacher at Central Elementary in Cabot; Ericia Curruth, a teacher at Geyer Springs Elementary in Little Rock; and Emma Mateo, a teacher at Otter Creek Elementary in Little Rock each received a grant.
Boyd said the grant will go toward the Future Citizens project her students are taking on.
“One goal of our responsive classroom is to help students develop skills so [they] understand and achieve a higher degree of care and respect,” said Boyd. “Developing a community of support can be enhanced by students’ involvement in classroom jobs.”
Thanks to the grant, Curruth's fourth-grade students will work on their math skills with the "First in Math" software.
“The program was used in our building last year and was quite successful,” said Curruth. “I saw how motivated my students were to learn from the hands on educational games.”
Mateo, who teaches special-needs students, will use the grant to purchase Leveled Reader Books for her class.
“These are students who have been diagnosed with unique learning deficits that interfere [with] their manner of learning in the average classroom,” said Mateo. “My students need all the support and materials they can get in order to be successful in the classroom.”
