Former congressman Vic Snyder, who last year opted not to run again for the seat he held for 14 years, will be the new corporate medical director for Arkansas Blue Cross and Blue Shield, the health insurer said Monday.

In his new post, Snyder will help develop medical policy, member benefits and hospital networks for the largest health insurer in Arkansas.

“Dr. Snyder is uniquely qualified to assist Arkansas Blue Cross in understanding the nuances of the current and future impacts of health care reform,” said Dr. Robert Griffin, senior vice president and chief medical officer for Arkansas Blue Cross. “As a former congressman with both medical and law degrees, he brings a rare combination to our members as we help them navigate the health care system.”

Snyder was a family practice physician in Little Rock for 15 years. While at his medical practice, he got his law degree from the University of Arkansas at Little Rock.

He served in the Arkansas Legislature from 1991 until 1996 before being elected the 2nd District representative.
