Device on trash bin at Forrest City apartments explodes

By The Associated Press

This article was published July 1, 2011 at 9:20 a.m.

Authorities say a device attached to a trash bin exploded as a garbage truck driver was making his rounds in Forrest City.

Police said they received a call about the blast at the Indian Hills Apartment Complex just before 8 a.m. Thursday.

Sgt. Travis Hill told the Forrest City Times-Herald that when King Disposal truck driver Frankie Wolfe inserted the vehicle’s metal handles into the sides of the bin, the device ignited. Hill says the company’s owner went to the scene and found a similar device on another bin.

Wolfe wasn’t injured.

Officials say the device consisted of chemicals which ignited once they made contact with the handles.

Arkansas State Police are investigating.
