— 100 YEARS AGO July 22, 1911

Mrs. Ida Walker, who lives at 811 Pulaski, reported to the police yesterday morning that a man had tried to get into her house about 2 o’clock, and that her dog had chased him away. She found a pair of trousers out in the back yard, and the inference made is that the intruder was given such a hot chase by the dog that he lost his garment. The pants are being held at police headquarters until the owner calls for them.

50 YEARS AGO July 22, 1961

State Education Commissioner Arch Ford yesterday mildly rebuked President Kennedy for urging more emphasis on physical education in schools. “I don’t oppose physical education,” Ford said, “but I think the schools should be left to offer what the school boards and administrators think should be offered. I don’t think too much of political interference from anyone from the president on down to the area of school curriculum. This should be left to professional educators.” Wednesday Kennedy announced plans to contact school administrators across the country because he is concerned about the physical fitness of America’s youth.

25 YEARS AGO July 22, 1986 JACKSONVILLE - About 7,000 uniformed personnel will receive blood tests at Little Rock Air Force base to check for the Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome antibody, a base spokesman confirmed Monday. “It’s nothing unique with us out here,” Sgt. Buddy Garrett, a base spokesman, said Monday night. Personnel at U.S. military bases worldwide will be tested for the presence of the AIDS antibody, he noted.

10 YEARS AGO July 22, 2001 LUDWIG - Special agents with the U.S. Customs Service found more than $369,000 buried in an Igloo ice chest on land alongside Arkansas 292 in Johnson County on Friday afternoon, agent Robert J. Mesinger said. The cash was seized as suspected drug-smuggling money. Authorities said they do not believe the current landowners had any connection to the cash, which has been hidden for several years.
