GREENWOOD — A bill toughening the ban on smoking in cars with children is about to become Arkansas law.
Current law makes it illegal to smoke in a car with a child younger than 6. The law that goes into effect on Monday raises the age to 14.
Greenwood police Capt. Richie Wolford says officers will vigorously enforce the new standard.
Wolford says second-hand smoke is much more concentrated in a car than in a home or a bar. The toxins in the smoke are harmful to developing respiratory, immune and nervous systems in children.
Wolford told Fort Smith television station KHBS that anyone in Greenwood who sees someone smoking in a car with a young child should call police to report it.
