Georgia is the latest state to propose legislation that questions whether President Barack Obama was born in the U.S.
Georgia Rep. Mark Hatfield, a Republican, says he introduced the bill Monday because he still doesn’t know if Obama is eligible to serve as president. Ninety-two of his GOP colleagues and one Democrat also support the bill, which is enough for the proposal to pass the Georgia House.
Ten other states also have measures that want more proof before Obama’s name is put on the 2012 ballot, even though Hawaii officials have repeatedly confirmed Obama’s citizenship and his birth certificate has been made public.
So-called “birthers” have contended since 2008 that Obama is ineligible to be president. They argue he was actually born in Kenya.
