Russellville defeats Beebe in first round

— Russellville took 49-37 victory against the Beebe Lady Badgers in the first round of the Heavenly Hoops Tournament at Mount St. Mary in Little Rock on Monday.

The Lady Cyclones made six field goals after leading 28-24 with 5:10 left in the third quarter -- after hitting just four in the first quarter and half -- and hit their free throws down the stretch to ice the victory.

“I think both teams were a little off to start the game,” Russellville Coach Steve Wiedower said. “But we found our offense in the second half and managed to hold off a tough Beebe team that really fought us the whole way.”

Kaylee Wiedower led all players with 17 points for Russellville. Jamie Jackson finished with a team-high 11 for Beebe, and Kalela Miller contributed 10.

In other games, Star City outscored Little Rock Christian 21-12 in the second half to roll to a 51-41 victory. Tyeshia Harris led all scorers with 22 points for the Lady Bulldogs, with Olydia Thornton finishing with 14 for Star City. Rachel Etherington and Brooklyn Burks finished with 12 apiece for Little Rock Christian and Kelsey Smith had 10. ... Watson Chapel scored 34 first-half points in a 62-33 victory over Forrest City. Karema Bozeman led the way with 16 points for Watson Chapel, and Forrest City’s Marina Ford had 11. ... Mount St. Mary jumped out to a 12-4 first-quarter lead and never looked back in a 67-33 rout of Sylvan Hills. Brady Escovedo and Emily Hudson finished with 10 points each for Mount St. Mary and Sylvan Hill’s Kali Minton finished with 13.
