India bridge falls, killing at least 13

— CALCUTTA, India - Officials said Saturday that a wooden bridge spanning a river in the northeastern Indian district of Darjeeling collapsed as local mountain villagers gathered on it for a meeting, and at least 13 people were killed.

Rescuers rushed to the scene and recovered more than 50 injured people from the riverbed area about 70 feet below, but dozens are still thought to be missing.

Top police official Surajit Kar Purakayaspha said the bridge over the Rangeet River fell apart as about 150 people gathered on it Saturday night to listen to speeches by local administration leaders in Bijanbari.
