— 100 YEARS AGO Oct. 23, 1911

Argentans who work in Little Rock and those from across the river who work on the Argenta side, saw the first frost of the year yesterday morning. Although no killing frost formed, there was a light frost and it was easily perceptible on the long free bridge. In fact, before the sun arose to dissipate the crystalline formation, the “pikeway” to Little Rock was almost white.

50 YEARS AGO Oct. 23, 1961

About 2,000 Catholic laymen took part yesterday in the first day of the celebration of the 50th anniversary of St. John’s Home Missions Seminary. The celebration will extend through Thursday and will include a dinner, special masses and other events.

25 YEARS AGO Oct. 23, 1986 BATESVILLE - About 15 women in southeastern Independence County have received threatening letters claiming devil worshipers are watching them, Sheriff Gerald Fulbright said Wednesday. “Thedevil worshipers are now living in your community and they are watching you day and night,” the typed, unsigned letters said. “You may be chosen as one of their next victims.” Fulbright said he has three of the letters, and they are all written on single page, fold-and-seal stationery that requires no envelope. The outsides of the letters are decorated with rabbits, butterflies and radishes.

Public welfare and personal freedom are clashing at two Arkansas schools where pupils with strong religious beliefs say they shouldn’t have to get a hepatitis B vaccination to get an education. Cabot High School student Ashley Boone and Ozark grade school pupil Danielle Mc-Carthy were expelled Oct. 1 after they refused to getthe vaccine the Arkansas Department of health says they need to attend public school. Both pupils claim religious beliefs prohibit them from getting the shots, but neither was granted a religious exemption because their families aren’t members of an organized religion.
