— 100 YEARS AGO Oct. 24, 1911

For the first time in several months, the Little Rock recruiting station of the United States Army will make a special effort to secure negro recruits. Major Ewing, in charge of the station, has received a telegram from the department at Washington asking that the Little Rock station and its subsidiaries submit the names of exceptionally desirable negro applicants, either with or without record of prior service. Practically all of the negro enlistments that have been made at Little Rock for the past year have been previous service men. The army is very strict in its requirements for negro applicants.

50 YEARS AGO Oct. 24, 1961

Burglars used a wheelbarrow they found in the West Markham Hardware Store, 8105 West Markham Street, to haul out the company’s safe over the weekend - but returned the wheelbarrow to its proper place before leaving. Sheriff’s Deputies Kenneth Best and Jack Morgan said the safe contained an undetermined amount of money but probably not more than $200 since only Saturday’s receipts had been placedin it.

25 YEARS AGO Oct. 24, 1986 ENGLAND - It was a cold, clammy, cruel moving day on Thursday for residents of the Delta Nursing Home. About a dozen state-owned vans and ambulances lined up outside the building of brick and cinder block to carry out the Office of Long Term Care’s decision to close the home. State officials said the home was detrimental to the health and welfare of 74 residents, who are elderly and mentally or physically handicapped. There were problems with care and medication, along with a shortage of food, the state contended.

10 YEARS AGO Oct. 24, 2001 EL DORADO - McDonald’s restaurant workers found a dead deer under a sink in the men’s bathroom, and police are trying to figure out how it got there. The doe was on its back when found Sunday morning. Employees called officers about three hours after the restaurant opened. Manager Jeff Moss told police he didn’t know who brought the deer into the restaurant and said he couldn’t figure out how someone got the deer inside without someone noticing.
