Police identify 1 dead, 1 hurt in Hot Springs shooting

— A Hot Springs man who was shot and killed Saturday evening after an altercation at a party was identified Monday, along with a second Hot Springs man who was also shot and critically injured.

Justin Burks, 27, was pronounced dead at the scene at a Chestnut Street home while the second victim, identified as Lucas Horsley, 27, was transported to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries.

Hot Springs police arrested Herbert Pierre Bennett, 24, in Mountain Pine on felony charges of first-degree murder, punishable by up to life in prison, and criminal attempt at first-degree murder, punishable by up to 30 years.

He was held without bail and is set to appear Nov. 8 in Hot Springs District Court.

According to an affidavit in the case, officers responded to a call about a shooting shortly before 5 p.m. Saturday and found both victims. Burks had been shot once in the chest, and Horsley was shot once in the neck.

Burks was pronounced dead at the scene by Garland County Deputy Coroner Ryan Hamilton.

The affidavit notes three witnesses at the scene identified Bennett as the one who shot the victims after getting into a fight with Burks.
