— FOOTBALL UCA’s Love earns honor

Central Arkansas sophomore safety Jestin Love was named the Southland Conference defensive player of the week Monday.

Love had 9 tackles, 1 forced fumble and a 31-yard interception return for a touchdown in the Bears’ 38-24 victory at Lamar on Saturday.

The Bears (5-3, 4-1 Southland Conference) host Southeastern Louisiana Saturday in Conway.

GAC names weekly honors

Southern Arkansas quarterback Tyler Sykora, Henderson State defensive end Robbie Aldridge and Arkansas Tech kick returner A.J. Whitmore were named Great American Conference players of the week Monday.

Sykora was named offensive player of the week after he completed 32 of 56 passes for 520 yards with 5 touchdowns in the Muleriders’ 53-43 loss to Ouachita Baptist on Saturday. His yardage set a school record for a single game.

Aldridge was named co-defensive player of the week after posting 8 total tackles, including 5 tackles for a loss and 1 sack in a 42-41 overtime victory over East Central (Okla.). Aldridge also forced one fumble.

Whitmore was named special teams player of the week after he recorded an 85-yard kickoff return for a touchdown in a 28-16 victory over Southeastern Oklahoma State.

Ouachita Baptist ranked in regional poll

Ouachita Baptist was ranked No. 8 in the NCAA Div.-II regional rankings released Monday.

Ouachita Baptist (5-2, 4-0) beat Southern Arkansas 53-43 last Saturday in Arkadelphia. Ouachita Baptist will face Harding this Saturday.

Dunbar wins middle school title

Dunbar beat Pulaski Heights 20-0 to capture the Little Rock School District middle school eighth-grade championship Tuesday at Little Rock Central’s Quigley-Cox Stadium.

Dunbar, Pulaski Heights and Horace Mann all finished 5-1 in conference play.

Mann beat Dunbar 16-0 to claim the seventh-grade championship Tuesday at Quigley-Cox Stadium.

The teams tied for the conference championship (5-1).

Mann, Henderson, Dunbar, Cloverdale, Mabelvale, Forest Heights and Pulaski Heights are members of the LRSD middle school conference.

SOFTBALL Larabee and team USA capture gold

Arkansas Coach Mike Larabee and Team USA won the gold medal at the Pan American Games on Sunday in Guadalajara, Mexico, defeating Canada 11-1 in four innings.

The USA team went 9-0 while outscoring their opponents 78-8 in the event. The pitching staff recorded five shutouts while holding opponents to a .145 batting average.

GOLF UALR women fourth on road

UALR was tied for fourth with Arkansas State after 36 holes of the Blue Raider Invitational on Monday in Murfreesboro, Tenn.

UALR was led by junior Emelie Westrup and senior Megan Vaughn. Westrup is tied for fifth at 4-over par 148, while Vaughn is in 14th at 8-over 152.

Anna Carling shot her second 74 and leads Arkansas State at fifth place.

Host Middle Tennessee leads the 13-team field at 17-over 593. UALR and Arkansas State trail by 16.
