A genuine Arkansas Hero has passed away. W.C. BUDDY COLEMAN heard the final whistle,passing peacefully at his home surrounded by love. Buddy was a hero to so many people in the Dairy industry and the sports community. His generosity touched many lives, andhe was loved and cherished by literally thousands of friends and a large close family. The old quote, “He never met a stranger.” was used over and over when referring to Buddy. A native of Little Rock, Arkansas, Buddy was born and raised on the family dairy farm. Since 1862, Coleman Dairy has been operated by the Coleman family and has grown to be the leading dairy processing and distributing plant in the state. The dairy will celebrate its 150th year in 2012.

After graduating from Little Rock High School, Louisiana State University and serving in the U.S. Air Force, Buddy returned home to the dairy business in 1953. In 1964, Buddy was named President of Coleman Dairy Inc. and in 1971 elected Chairman of the Board and Chief Executive Officer.

Along the way, Buddy’s peers have recognized his talents as a leading dairyman in Arkansas as well as the United States. He served as President of Quality Chekd Dairy Products Association, an international dairy association providing consultation and assistance in all areas of dairy activities. He is past President of the Southern Association of Dairy Food Manufacturers and the Arkansas Dairy Products Association, a past board member of the National Dairy Council and as a member of the Governor’s Advisory Committee to the Arkansas Grade “A” Milk Program.

In addition to his profession as a dairyman, he is well known on the football field, having been a Southwest Conference Football Official for 26 years, working in over 250 college games and 15 bowl games, including two National Championships. He is an inductee and past President of Arkansas Sports Hall of Fame and was President and a board member of numerous charitableand civic organizations; working actively with the Boy Scouts, Boy’s Club and Little League Baseball. He was a veteran of over 50 years with a 42-year perfect attendance record in the Little Rock Downtown Kiwanis Club and a Chairman of Kiwanis Activities, Inc., which runs the Joseph Pfeifer Kiwanis Camp, and a former President and member of the Little Rock Executives Association.

He is survived by his wife, Carolynn; and four sons: Walt and wife, Cynthia; Bob and wife, Beverly; Charlie and wife, Patti; Cherb and wife, Connie; seven grandchildren: Bob Jr.; Walt IV and wife,Morgan; Turner and wife, Anna; Courtney, Arden, Jacob and Jonathan; and one great-granddaughter, Ella Arden Coleman; and two nieces, Tommie Lou Coleman and Linda Clements. Buddy is also survived by Carolynn’s children: Angelynn Hardcastle and husband, Mike Clay Crews; their children, Rebecca and Nicholas Hardcastle,and Clare and Amanda Crews. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Robbye Cooper Coleman and Carolynn’s children, Elise and Jamie Crews.

PEGGY L. GEHEB LARCH, 71, of Little Rock, passed from this life on October 23, 2011. She wasborn to Bernard and Agnes Hassler Geheb in Gonzales, California, on October 12, 1940. Mrs. Larch enjoyed gardening, doing crossword puzzles, was a great wife, a wonderfulmother and loved being a grandmother. DOUGLAS “HAROLD” McLELLAND, lost his battle with heart disease and Alzheimer’s onFriday, Oct. 21, 2011. Born May 25, 1930 in Prescott, Ark., to Willis J. McLelland and Lecta McNeely McLelland, he attended Prescott schools and graduated in 1948. Aftermoving to Little Rock, he joined the Army National Guard, where he retired after 30 years. He attended watch repair school and worked for Cave’s Jewelers in downtown Little Rock. In 1967, he and Tilden Swenson opened Hobby’s Jewelers in the Heights. He later bought out his partner and owned and operated the store until 2002, when it was sold. Harold belonged to Calvary Baptist Church for 38 years and the Adult 2 Dept. and Men’s Sunday School Class. He also belonged to the Lions Club for many years.

Harold was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Maurice and Raymond; and three sisters, Yvonne, Polly and Virginia. Harold is survived by his wife, Jodi, whom he married in 1973; and by his children, Steve, Tim and wife, Debbie, John and wife, Michelle, Rebecca and husband, Clint, and Marc; by seven grandchildren, Sam, Sarah Michelle, Josh, Olivia, Orbre’, Luke and Jessica; four sisters, Kitty, Opal,Betsy and Joyce; many friends and his Calvary Baptist family.

Harold’s body was donated for research and there are no services scheduled at this time. His wishes were that memorials be made to the Calvary Baptist Church Building Fund, 5700 Cantrell Rd. The family would like to thank Hospice Home Care for their excellent care; Arkansas Heart Drs. Donald Meacham and Eleanor Kennedy and staff for their many years of care and service; Dr. Lawrence Mendelsohn and staff for all the love and extra care provided for many years; Dr. Benny Green and staff for their great support system and all those at Baptist Health for the great care to our family during his years of blood transfusions.

Harold was a blessing to so many who knew and loved him over the years and will be missed, but God has welcomed him Home.

CHARLES PRESTON ROSS SR., 75, of Little Rock passed away Monday, October 24, 2011. He was born August 9, 1936 in Carlisle, Ark., to the late Carl Alexander and Tressie Mae Hill Ross. ARKADELPHIA - Vivian Louisa Lakey, age 64, of Arkadelphia passed from this life on Monday October 24, 2011 at her home. She was born on January 28, 1947 in Murfreesboro, Tenn., the daughter of the late Albert Dolvan and Charlotte Phillips Speelman. Vivian worked as the office manager for Andrew’s Candy Kitchen and circulation manager for Des Plains Publishing. She was a member of Richwoods Baptist Church and a United States Army veteran.

Vivian was preceded in death by her brother, Albert Doyle Speelman. She is survived by her husband, Robert Lewis Lakey, one daughter, Shawn Dew (Jimmy) Carlton of Arkadelphia, one son, Erin Grogan of Chicago and seven grandchildren, Dustin Cooper, Quenton Cooper, Jared Carlton, Molly Carlton, Zachary Grogan, Kylie Grogan and Bryce Grogan.

He was a member of the Tulsa Press Club, Sigma Delta Chi and Second Baptist Church in Conway, Ark.

He was preceded in death by his previously mentioned parents and his wife of 47 years, Mary Esther (Grimm) Larkins. FAYETTEVILLE - Willard Badgett Gatewood Jr., 80, passed away on October 23, 2011, at Butterfield Trail Village. Dr. Gatewood was born on February 23, 1931, on a farm on the Park Springs Road in Caswell County, North Carolina to the late Willard B. and Bessie Pryor Gatewood. He received his B.A., M.A., and Ph.D. at Duke University in Durham, N.C. in the field of U.S.History. Dr. Gatewood began his college teaching career at East Tennessee State University in 1957, where he met his wife of now 53 years, Mary Lu Brown Gatewood. This was followed by appointments to the faculties of East Carolina University, North Carolina Wesleyan College and the University of Georgia. At Georgia he received the Michael Research Award and the Joseph Parks Award for Excellence in Teaching. He directed ten Ph.D. dissertations while at Georgia.

In 1970 Dr. Gatewood was appointed the first Alumni Distinguished Professor of History at the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville, a chair endowed by the Arkansas Alumni Association, that he occupied until his retirement there in 1998. During his tenure there, he was the cofounder of the University of Arkansas Press; served as Chancellor of the University in 1984-1985; taught hundreds of undergraduate and graduate students; and supervised 25 Ph.D. dissertationsand numerous master’s theses. He received the University’s Distinguished Research Award in 1980, the Chancellor’s Medal for Distinguished Service in 1994, and the Arkansas Alumni Association Honorary Alumni Award in 2000.

He was elected president of the Southern Historical Association; served as a member of the Board of Directors of the Winthrop Rockefeller Foundation and the Arkansas Humanities Council; directed 2 National Endowment for the Humanities summer seminars; was a member of 9 annual NEH Review Panels; and was consultant for 5 documentary films. During his academic career, Dr. Gatewood was the author, co-author, or editor of 14 books, as well as more than 75 articles in historical journals. His works received a number of awards and prizes, and his “Aristocrats of Color: The Black Elite, 1880-1920” was nominated for the National Book Award. Dr. Gatewood was a founding board member of The Bank of Fayetteville and the Fayetteville Community Foundation; founding board member of the Walton Arts Center Council, and a member and Elder of the First Presbyterian Church of Fayetteville.

Survivors include his wife, Mary Lu Brown Gatewood; Bill Gatewood of Little Rock; daughter, Ellis Gatewood Elliott, of Greensboro, N.C.; and 5 grandchildren; Jon David, Pryor, and Timothy Stroud and Ben and Lucy Gatewood. HOT SPRINGS - Earl Williamson, 84, of Hot Springs,Arkansas, died Tuesday, October 25, 2011. He was born June 25, 1927 in Hot Springs, Arkansas to the late Joseph Henry and Ruth (Talley) Williamson. He was a member of Centerfork Missionary Baptist Church. Earl was the original manufacturer of steel floating docks on the Hot Springs area lakes, a business which he started in 1962 and still runs strong today under the direction of his son, Buzzy. He loved to hunt quail and deer with friends and family, enjoyed traveling, but will most be remembered as a very family oriented man who loved his grandchildren dearly.

Earl is preceded in death by his parents; his wife Dona Jean Williamson and his brother. SEARCY - Sudie Mae (Blount) Pannell, 90, of Searcy, Arkansas,was born February 11, 1921, at Garner, Arkansas, to Eugene and Ethel (Austin) Blount, and she died Tuesday, October 25, 2011. She was a devout member of Garner Missionary BaptistChurch. She and her husbandwere long-time owners of K. B. Pannell General Mercantile. Sudie loved to cook and was famous for her coconut pie.

She is survived by her daughter, Margie L. Jones (Joe Merle) of Searcy; grandchildren Jody Jones and Tony Jones, both of Searcy, Kim Galloway (David) of Garner and Jackie Fox Jones of McRae; great-grandchildren Joey Jones (Amanda), Sara Titsworth (Chris), Josh Galloway, Emily Galloway and Blake Jones; great-great-grandchildren, Jacelyn Jones, Jace Romine, Jaden Jones, Hollis Titsworth and Camryn Titsworth; her sister, Eularuel Dubose of Higden; brother, Cloyce Blount of Gosnell. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, K.B. Pannell; sister, Oretha Paris; and brother, Robert Blount.

TUCKERMAN - Bobby Ray “Bob” McClure, 64, of Tuckerman departed this life Monday, October 24, 2011. He was a member of Ballews Chapel Free Will Baptist Church and enjoyed spending time with his wife, children and grandchildren, hunting, fishing, and watching football and baseball.
