— 100 YEARS AGO Oct. 26, 1911

In a minute examination of the city records this morning it was found that at the present time Argenta has about 25 miles of concrete sidewalks and the citizens are daily asking City Clerk Gurlach for individual permits to do their own work without having to form an improvement district, many of the streets have been entirely paved with sidewalks on both sides by the citizens on their own accord and of course for their own advantage.

50 YEARS AGO Oct. 26, 1961

To hear the women tell it, Little Rock is squirrelier this year than at any other time in recent years. Also rattier. The reputed squirrel population explosion is a popular conversation topic these days at bridge clubs, teas and luncheons. Efforts to reduce these reports to statistical evidence - at least as far as the city itself is involved - proved fruitless yesterday, although a state Game and Fish Commission man did indeed confirm that as far as Arkansas is concerned, the squirrel population is going in a different direction than the people population.

25 YEARS AGO Oct. 26, 1986

Little Rock residents have had varying reactions to the city’s experimental “Super-Cart” garbage pickup program, with some loving the wheel-mounted carts, and others hating them. Some residents say the new 90-gallon plastic carts the city is testing to replace the traditional trash can are convenient and attractive, while others see them as ugly, bulky nuisances.

10 YEARS AGO Oct. 26, 2001 HEBER SPRINGS - A proposal to ban smoking in most Arkansas restaurants now awaits final word from the state’s nonsmoking governor, who could decide as soon as next week. State Board of Health members, invoking what they said was their duty to protect the public, approved the smoking ban Thursday after more than two years of debate. Gov. Mike Huckabee has expressed reluctance to enact such a ban.
