Site in PB will get Civil War marker

— An Arkansas Civil War Sesquicentennial historical marker has been approved to be erected in Jefferson County, it was announced this week.

The historical marker will be at 714 W. Fourth Ave. in Pine Bluff to honor the Boone-Murphy House, which was used as the headquarters for Union Col. Powell Clayton during the war.

The Pine Bluff Historic District Commission is sponsoring the marker. Approval for the marker is from the Arkansas Civil War Sesquicentennial Commission, a state panel housed within the Arkansas Historic Preservation Program.

The commission’s historical marker program works with local partners to help tell the stories of how the Civil War affected communities around the state.

A commission goal is to have at least one marker in each of the state’s 75 counties by the end of the commemoration period in 2015. So far, 20 markers have been installed.
