Funding extended for Talent Search program

— Henderson State University’s Talent Search program, which provides intervention services for middle and high school students who aspire to continue their education beyond high school, has received refunding of more than $1 million over five years.

Talent Search works cooperatively with target middle and high schools to provide eligible students in grades six through 12 with additional academic and career counseling to ensure their success in school and life.

Specific emphasis is placed on completion of a rigorous high school curriculum and expectation of enrollment in college.

Talent Search also servesh ig h school d ropout s by encouraging them to re-enter the educational system and complete their educat ion. Henderson’s Ta lent Search counselors will target and work with students at A rk adelph ia , Bau x ite, Bismarck, Gurdon, Magnet Cove and Malvern schools.

“The goal of Henderson’s Ta lent Search program is to increase the number of youth from disadvantaged backgrounds who complete high school and enroll in and complete their postsecondary education,” said Vernon Miles, provost and vice president for academic affairs.

M i le s s a id ot her measured outcomes of the Talent Search program are the percentage of low-income students who persist through high school, the percentage of those who graduate from high school and the percentage of students who complete a program of postsecondary education in six years.

“I am delighted that Henderson’s Talent Search was re-funded, as students are able to continue to receive college preparation services,” said Pamela Bax, director of Henderson’s six TRIOprograms. “Our counselors work with the school counselors and with eligible Talent Search students one on one to provide the academic support students need to persist through postsecondary education and enroll into a college of their choice.” All services are free.
