— 100 YEARS AGO Oct. 27, 1911

Dr. J.H. Squires, agronomist of the technical division of the E.I. duPont de Nemours Powder Company of Wilmington, Del., visited the Department of Agriculture yesterday. Dr. Squires intends to make a study of the various soils in Arkansas with reference to the advisability of remedying hard pan conditions by the use of dynamite. He will ask permission of the Capitol Commission to be allowed to make a demonstration on the grounds in front of the state capitol to show how the soil may be benefited by breaking it up with dynamite.

50 YEARS AGO Oct. 27, 1961

The Little Rock junior high schools for the second straight year are setting up temporary firing ranges in their gymnasiums and, using air rifles and “live” BBs, are teaching eighth and ninth grade students about guns. The idea is to teach the students, both boys and girls, to handle guns safely. Physical education teachers give the course during regular physical educationclasses. Most of the instruction is with unloaded rifles.

25 YEARS AGO Oct. 27, 1986

For the third day in a row, fire broke out Sunday night at an apartment building in Southwest Little Rock, bringing to seven the number of suspected arsons that have plagued such dwellings in the area since Oct. 16. The incident at Cloverdale Apartments, 901 Gardner Road, was the first to take place in an occupied building, officials said. No one has been injured in any of the fires. Police have no leads.

10 YEARS AGO Oct. 27, 2001

Gov. Mike Huckabee rejected Friday the state Board of Health’s recommendation to ban smoking in restaurants, turning away from his own beliefs to ensure the personal freedoms of others. His decision brings the issue back to where it began in the 1990s, when nonprofit groups pushed smoking bans from town to town, watched a proposed law die and witnessed its rebirth by the Health Board.
