Superb 'Take Shelter' opens in Arkansas

The big news in Arkansas this week is the opening of favorite son Jeff Nichols’ highly anticipated psychological drama Take Shelter, which our Philip Martin calls “a movie of plausible horrors and tender moments, the sort of film that — if you are susceptible — can fill you up with inchoate feelings, unexplainable longings and phantom pains ... the sort of movie to make you hug those you love.”

(And for those of you keeping score, Martin awards it the highest grade of any movie of 2011 to date.) And in his OnFilm column, Martin talks with Nichols about the film’s genesis.

But Take Shelter is far from the only film opening this week — there’s Vera Farmiga’s remarkable-in-its-own-way Higher Ground, the kiddie pleaser Puss in Boots (which some say is better than the Shrek series from which it was spun off), a Spanish sort-of sequel to Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid starring Sam Shepard (Blackthorn) and the sci-fi thriller In Time.
