Jumpy Arkansans, no longer taking anything for granted, now find fear inside their mailboxes, stored in their refrigerators and even hanging on their walls. The newly formed bioterrorism command center at the Arkansas Department of Health logs up to 70 calls a day as beleaguered health officials try to quell a growing panic over anthrax. One man called about a rack of deer antlers hanging on his wall: He wanted it tested for anthrax spores. Another man who touched an egg in his refrigerator reported that he developed a tingling sensation in his arm. He wondered if anthrax was the culprit. Flecked powder in the mailbox of a rural home sent one woman searching for a saw. After she finally got the mailbox down, she packed it in a barrel and sent it to the Health Department. Later, relieved to find out the powder was nothing more than peeling latex paint, the woman demanded her mailbox back, pronto, along with the barrel she had sent it in.
