Blue Devils get running early to win

— West Memphis (8-1, 5-1 7A/6A-East) rolled up 290 first-half rushing yards in a 53-7 victory over Jacksonville on Friday.

“We ran the ball very well tonight, especially on the edges,” West Memphis Coach Lanny Dauksch said. “We’ve got some skill people if we can get them out there.”

West Memphis couldn’t keep them out there on the first possession because of two penalties and a 9-yard sack on third down, but it didn’t take long for the Blue Devils to get going.

Senior fullback Taz Watson, who led all rushers with 125 yards on 12 carries, gave West Memphis a 6-0 lead with 6:37 left in the first quarter on a 4-yard touchdown.

Jacksonville (4-5, 3-3) responded to take a 7-6 lead when Kevin Richardson returned the ensuing kickoff 93 yards for a touchdown.
