BARBARA ALEXANDER HERRING, Ed D. of Little Rock, bornJuly 19, 1946 in Laurel, Mississippi, died October 27, 2011.

Barbara was the beloved wife of G. Frank Herring, MD.; the loving mother of Alison of Dallas, Texas, Elizabeth (Nathan) Williams of Memphis, Tenn., and Robert of Little Rock; the adoring grandmother of Joseph and Kenneth Williams, the devoted sister-in-law of Sarah Herring and numerous cousins.

Throughout her life, Barbara was passionate about education, embroidery, teaching, and volunteering. Barbara achieved a Doctorate in Higher Education from the University of Arkansas at Little Rock (UALR), a Master of Education in Teaching the Gifted and Talented also from UALR, and a Bachelor of Arts in French from the University of Mississippi.

Barbara was an active member of the Embroiderer’s Guild of America (EGA), the American Needlepoint Guild (ANG), and the American Quilter’s Society (AQS). She was a past president of the Diamond Chapter of EGA, was a Certified Needlework Judge with EGA, served as Chairman of the EGA Appraisal Certification Program, was the Chairman of the Research Fellowship Grant Committee with EGA (2003-2009), was a Certified Needlework Appraiser with ANG, and was an instructor of numerous embroidery courses over the years. She conducted appraisals of antique works of embroidery and quilts. Barbara had over 30 years of formal embroidery and quilting instruction through classes sponsored by ANG, AQS, EGA, the Embroiderers’ Guild (Great Britain), the National Academy of Needlearts, and other independent teachers (the United States, England, and France).

Barbara also taught French and Spanish to Jr. High School students in both Little Rock and Dallas, Texas. Barbara also taught embroidery to children in Summer Laureate University for Youth Program at UALR, and was a volunteer at Arkansas Children’s Hospital (1999-2011). Barbara enjoyed the fellowship of good friends in her Bridgegroup, tending to her rose garden, and traveling with her husband in Europe.

Barbara is preceded in death by her parents, Robert Lafayette Alexander and Alice Voit Alexander of El Dorado. Barbara will be deeply missed, and will always be remembered.

The funeral will be at 11 a.m. on Monday, October 31st at Second Presbyterian Church in Little Rock with interment at 4 p.m. at Waldo Cemetery in Waldo, Ark. under the direction of Roller-Chenal Funeral Home, (501) 224-8300. BENTON - Amelia Trevino Frazier, 66, of Benton, passedaway October 26, 2011, at Saline Memorial Hospital. She was born June 8, 1945, in Pearsall, Texas, to Fortunado Trevino and Teodora Cortez. Amelia retired from UnileverBestfoods in Little Rock after 20 years of service. She also served with the U.S. Army Dental Corps during the Vietnam era. She spent most of her time giving to others and volunteering and had an unconditional love for animals. In 2010, she was featured in the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette for donating critical lifesaving equipment to the Benton Fire Department. The first of its kind in the state, the equipment enabled firefighters to provide oxygen to animals caught in house fires. She frequently donated to numerous charities, her favorite being the Humane Society of the United States.

Amelia was an incredibly selfless and generous person, and her life set an example of what it truly means to live for others. She was a member of Midtowne Church and a lifelong follower of Christ. Amelia loved shopping, reading, cooking and painting. She left us unexpectedly but was surrounded by the love of her family and friends. She will be deeply missed by many.

BENTON - Jack William Hodshire, 86, of Benton passed away on October 28, 2011. He was born on March 16, 1925, in Granite City, Illinois, and grew up in the Missouri Ozarks. As a teenager, he left home to work at Fort Leonard Wood in the CCC Camps building barracks. He joined the Navy and served in both WWII and the Korean War. After the war, he met and married his wife of 52 years, Doylene. He also then went to work for Alcoa, where he retired. Mr. Hodshire was a longtime member of Trinity Baptist Church.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Jack and Grace Willison Hodshire; wife, Doylene;and brothers, Johnny and Don Hodshire. He is survived by his daughter, Lynesa Mathews and husband, George; three grandchildren, Holly, George Jr. and wife, Courtney, and Daniel; two great-grandchildren, Kayden and Kamryn; sister, Judy Chase and husband, Russell; brother, Bob Hodshire and wife, Mary; brother-in-law, George Brotherton and wife, Charlotte; 12 nieces and nephews; best friend, Roger Brown and wife, Kelly, and a host of other loyal friends.

BIGELOW -Maggie Evelyn Haggard Briggs, 89, of Bigelow, Arkansas, passed away Wednesday, October 26, 2011. She was born August 15, 1922, in Roby, Texas, a daughter of James Bluford Haggard and Roxie Ann YoungbloodHaggard. She was a retired seamstress, cafe owner and senior citizen center manager, and also a member of First Baptist Church in Perryville.

BRYANT - Tommy Ballew, 70, of Bryant died Thursday, October 27, 2011, at Saline Memorial Hospital Hospice House in Bryant. He was born June 19, 1941, in Wooster, Ark., to the late James and Bertha (Meggs) Ballew. He was of the Baptist faith and a union truck driver.

He was also preceded in death by three brothers. Survivors include one son, Ron Ballew, and two grandchildren, McKayla and Kenna Ballew, all of Bakersville, Calif.; a special friend, Ernestine Smart of Bryant; one brother, Gene Ballew and wife, Del; one sister, Lila Scott; other relatives, and many friends.

BRYANT - Claudia M. Hopper of Bryant passed away on Thursday, October 27, 2011 at age 95. She was a longtime Little Rock resident. Claudia retired as receptionist and switchboard operator at KARK Channel 4 in Little Rock. Claudia was blessed with a wonderful personality and a great sense of humor.

She is preceded in death by her husband, Charles; four brothers and four sisters. Mrs. Hopper is survived by her only child, John Hopper (Carol) of Bryant; two granddaughters, Laura Hopper of Conway and Paula Kolstad (Dr. Michael) of Nixa, Mo., and their two children, Madison and Chase; two favorite nieces, Bobbie Treece of Heber Springs and Marilyn Welch (Harvey) of Salem, South Carolina. Claudia was also considered grandma to her extended family.

And last, but not least, the family would like to express appreciation to the staff and employees of Heartland ReHab for there untiring love, patience and excellent care as her health failed. HEBER SPRINGS - Carol Catherine Dixon Field, age 68, ofHeber Springs, Arkansas, passed away on Wednesday, October 26, 2011. She was born in Gunnison, Colorado, October 20, 1943, to Curtis and Margaret Dixon.

She is survived by her sons, Curtis and his wife, Sarah of Littleton, Colorado and Darren and his wife, Donna of Rogers, Arkansas. Carol was beloved grandmother to Max, Ethan, and Channing Field of Rogers, Arkansas and Monica Simkins of Littleton, Colorado. She has a surviving brother, Cleve Dixon and his wife, Nancy, and a niece, Jessica Dixon of Aurora, Colorado. She was preceded in death by her parents, and her stepfather, Ted Everett.

In the Heber Springs School District, Carol Field was an outstanding counselor and teacherfor 27 years. She served as a science teacher in the Middle school, and as Special Education Resource teacher in both the Middle and High schools. Upon completion of her master’s degree from the University of Central Arkansas, she became the Elementary School counselor. Later, she successfully transitioned to the High School as counselor, where she worked until her retirement. Carol quickly developed a highly regarded reputation for her dedication, loyalty and meticulous attention to detail. The faculty had admiration for her quiet dignity when she worked with students. She gained great respect because of her devotion to those assigned to her care. Her confidentiality was prized; students trusted her and colleagues admired the impact she made on the student body. A former principal noted, “some people considered their positions as a job, she treated it as a labor of love. She was one of the nucleus of teachers whoheld the place together by professionalism.” Hours were spent writing personalized letters for students applying for jobs and scholarships. Long-term relationships were developed for the school because of her professionalism.

LESLIE - Bryan Douglas Wingo, age 33, of Leslie, Ark., passed from this life on Monday, October 24, 2011 in Damascus, Ark. He was born in Mountain View,Ark., on August 26, 1978 to Douglas Wingo and Bonnie (Hoard) Wingo. Bryan was a member of the Elaia Baptist Assembly Church in Thola. He was a truck driver for five years and especially enjoyed the challenge of hauling oversized heavy equipment loads. Bryan’s favorite things were fishing and spending time in the garden. He also enjoyed working on his trucks and building Chevy small block motors, drag racing, mudding and getting sideways on back roads. He loved his pet rabbit “Bandit” and his horse “Dennis the Menace.” He liked having farm animals and living in the country.

His father, Douglas Wingo and his grandparents, Ross and Ethel Wingo and Vernon and Velda Hoard, preceded him in death. Survivors include his wife, Amanda (Blair) Wingo of the home, whom he married on January 15, 2011; his mother, Bonnie Wingo of Lindale, Texas; one sister, Bethany Busbee and husband Kevin of Lindale, Texas, and their children, Lane, Patrick and Jesse Busbee; three sistersin-law, Elizabeth Blair and her children, Juan, Abigail, Anna, Isabelle and Ellie Salazar, HettieJean Parker and husband Tommy and their children, Patricia, April, T.J. and Carl Parker, and Melody Blair; two brothers-in-law, Kenneth Ray Blair and wife Brandy and their children, Bradyen Daniel, Trayten Begley, Johnny and Jerry Blair, and Guy Bruce Blair and his children, Weston and Emily Blair and Devin Litsey; and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins who will mourn his passing.

PERRYVILLE - Cecil J. Gray, 78, of Perryville, formerly of Little Rock, passed away Thursday, October 27, 2011. He was born May 14, 1933, in Marianna, Ark., to the late Lee F. Gray and Allie Shelby Gray. He was also preceded in death by twobrothers, Leo Gray and Charlie Gray. Mr. Gray was an Army veteran of the Korean Conflict. He was a senior buyer for BEI for 31 years and a member of Hebron Baptist Church in Little Rock.

He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Faydeane Gray; two sons, Stephen L. Gray of Maumelle and Brian K. SEARCY - Philip A. Piety, 80, of Searcy, passed away October 27, 2011. He was born December 8, 1930, in Des Arc, Arkansas, to the late Austin and Alice (Farrar) Piety.

He served in the U.S. Army after graduating from Millikin University. After the Army he put himself through law school in Chicago, and he practiced law in the Chicago area for many years before becoming president of an insurance company in California. Mr. Piety retired back to Arkansas in 1989.

In addition to his parents he is preceded in death by his wife of 32 years, Eileen (Uchacz) Piety; brother, Louis Piety; and sister, Sandra (Piety) McFadden.

Mr. Piety is survived by four children, Pam Sweeney, Michael Sheehan, Chris Piety and Carolyn Jacobs; two brothers, Harold and Richard Piety; one sister, Bobbie Piety; and 13 grandchildren.

Mr. Piety’s funeral service will be at 2 p.m., Sunday, October 30, 2011, in the Chapel of Roller-Daniel Funeral Home.

Interment will follow in Lakeside Cemetery in Des Arc, Arkansas.
