— 100 YEARS AGO Oct. 29, 1911 HOT SPRINGS - Insulting women on the streets in this city is anything but a profitable occupation, as H.E. Bliss, a young visitor to the city, can aver. Wednesday afternoon he is said to have spoken to Mrs. Thomas Sellers, wife of the assistant city ticket agent of the Rock Island, calling her “Cutey.” Besides receiving a well deserved whipping at the hands of Mr. Sellers, he was this morning fined $100 in the City Police Court on a charge of disturbing the peace.

50 YEARS AGO Oct. 29, 1961

Eight thousand Arkansas school teachers will assemble at Little Rock Wednesday through Friday for the 93rd annual meeting of the Arkansas Education Association. More obviously than in the past, the AEA this year has purposely steered the annual session away from controversial subjects such as politics and onto an almost exclusively professional track. Its Council on Education, the policy-making body of the AEA, now meets separately from the convention.

25 YEARS AGO Oct. 29, 1986

Rep. Tommy Robinson D-Ark., criticized Tuesday the recently concluded session of Congress, and called several laws passed “election-year gimmicks” and “buzzard bills.” Robinson reviewed several bills, including the Graham-Rudman bill, tax reform, the Superfund, the national war-on-drugs law, immigration reform and aid to the Contras in Central America, passed during the session at a speech to law students in Little Rock.

10 YEARS AGO Oct. 29, 2001

More than 150 protesters marched through Pulaski Heights on Sunday, converging on the homes of Warren Stephens and a top Stephens Group Inc. executive as dozens of Little Rock police officers stood watch. Chanting “Leave town murderers !”and “Warren Stephens, it’s got to stop!” some in the crowd raised banners depicting eviscerated animals demanding that Stephens withdraw financial support for Huntingdon Life Sciences. The drug-testing company, based in Huntingdon, England, uses animal testing in its research.
