Augusta Red Devils

Conference: 6-2A

Coach: Rickey Everett (first year)

Last year’s record: 17-10 (second in conference, 12th in state)

Returning starters: Jordan Brown (junior, 6-7), 15 points per game, all-district, all-conference and all-region; Ervin Gant (junior, 17 ppg), all-district, all-conference and all-region; and Romone Dillworth (senior).

Best inside players: Brown — “This year we will rely on his inside and outside game to assist in allowing us to compete in our tough conference schedule this year,” Everett said.

Match or exceed from last year: “Our last year’s high school boys basketball team was very talented and experienced; therefore, we compiled a successful run in winning our district tournament, finished third in our region and went on to play in the first and second rounds of the state tournament to be eliminated by the state champs,” he said. “We will be looking to our defensive play this year to compensate for the talent and experience we lost from last year’s team.”

Team strengths: “Our strengths for this year will be our team playing as a team and getting our freshmen and new players ready to compete in tournament play at the end of the season,” Everett said.

Team weakness: “Our weakness is having to play without the experience that we had last year; however, I like what I have and am looking forward to working with the Red Devils to build not just a team, but a program with pride,” the coach said.

Toughest opponents: “Our toughest opponent will be ourselves,” Everett said. “If we can get mentally tough and work together as a team and take it one day at a time, I feel we will be all right.”

Game to watch: “Our conference is tough, and every game will be a dog fight,” he said.

College prospects: Brown and Gant are the two players currently in the lead on our team for college looks,” Everett said. “However, the harder my players work in practice and in play, the more they could catch the eye of college coaches.”
