Munich orchestra to do Mozart’s Requiem on tour

— The Munich Symphony Orchestra and the Gloriae Dei Cantores Choir this week will give two Arkansas performances of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s Requiem:

Rink to return

River Market on Ice, sponsored by Arvest Bank, returns Nov. 19 to the River Market pavilions behind Ottenheimer Market Hall, 400 President Clinton Ave., Little Rock.

The rink will be open 4-9 p.m. Monday-Friday, 10 a.m.-10 p.m. Saturday, noon-8 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 19-Dec. 16 (5-9 p.m. Thanksgiving Day, Nov. 24) and 10 a.m.-10 p.m. Monday-Saturday and noon-8 p.m. Sunday from Dec. 17-Jan. 8 (limited hours Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day).

Voice recital

Students of the Chotard Institute of Music will present a fall voice recital at 7 p.m. Tuesday in the sanctuary of Pulaski Heights United Methodist Church, 4823 Woodlawn Ave., Little Rock.

Caitlin Mahaffy, Veena Akama-Makia, Madeleine Lowrey, Sarah Hastings, Emily May, Tressa Tiner, Kendall Gibson and Lauren Dudley, ages 13-18, will perform songs by 16th-century English composer John Dowland and Italian songs from the 17th and 18th centuries. James Maase will accompany.

Columbo comments

Amelie Hastie, associate professor of English, chairman of the film and media studies department at Amherst College and an expert on the classic television series Columbo, will give a lecture titled “Columbo and Crime Television” at 7:30 p.m. Thursday in Reves Recital Hall, Hendrix College, 1600 Washington Ave., Conway.

Tour auditions

Wildwood Park for theArts will hold auditions for three actors for its Arts in Education statewide touring production of the play Lily and the Apple Seed by April Gentry-Sutterfield at 5 p.m. Nov. 7 in the Lucy Lockett Cabe Festival Theatre at Wildwood, 20919 Denny Road, Little Rock.

Paid roles include Lily, a young woman; Grandma Francis, a “mature” woman; and Huck, a “youthful” male. Stacy Pendergraft, assistant professor of actor training at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock, will direct.

Provide a one- to twominute comedic monologue; those who play a musical instrument will receive special consideration. Wildwood is also seeking a stage manager with a valid driver’s license.

Our Town tryouts

University of Central Arkansas Theatre will hold auditions for three men and two women, age 30 and older, for Our Town by Thornton Wilder at 6 p.m. Nov. 8 in the Studio Theatre, Snow Fine Arts Center, UCA, 201 Donaghey, Conway.

Volunteer engineers

Arkansas members of the Lionel Collectors Club of America and other hobbyists are recruiting volunteer engineers to run Lionel trains on a large layout to be installed at William F. Laman Public Library System, Dec. 15-31.

The core group of hobbyists will hold a training class, 9 a.m.-noon Saturday at Laman Library’s main branch, 2801 Orange St., North Little Rock. Transformers, wireless controllers, operating accessories, and the trains will be provided for hands-on learning.

“We are seeking both experienced and wannabe engineers,” says Mike Mottler, chief engineer for the 12-by-24-foot, O-gauge layout to beinstalled at Laman Library main branch.

Volunteers will learn the control system, qualify for three-hour operating shift assignments during the event and receive a Lionel logo Tshirt as their on-duty “uniform.” Call (501) 327-8747 or e-mail mottlerm@gmail.com.

Theater meeting

The Arkansas Community Theater Association will hold its annual meeting Nov. 19 at the Argenta Community Theater, 405 Main St., North Little Rock.

Registration begins at 8:15 a.m.; welcome and business meeting will be at 9; and then a series of educational sessions and workshops on risk management, writing a play about your community, grant writing preparation, fundraising, developing youth programs, theater criticism from both sides of the footlights, building better schools through the creative process and do’s and don’ts of directing will run to 4:30 p.m.
