Good question

— In a column on Politico last week, writer Roger Simon interviewed a man named Bill Daley. If you’re hopelessly caught up in politics, you might even recognize the name. Bill Daley is the current White House chief of staff.

The column veered into, of all things, politics. (On Politico?) And the chief of staff repeated old lines about what a mess the president found when he took office, and how things are bound to get better economically, and how much heat the president has taken for bailing out the automobile industry and increasing the debt limit and dealing with international problems, yada, yada, yada.

When asked what he thinks of the polls, and President Obama’s chances of getting re-elected, Mr. Daley tried a laugh line:

“Considering the debacle that he came in with, the tough choices he’s made and how there have been few, if any, breaks, he says it himself all the time: He doesn’t know why he’s as high as 44 percent.”

We don’t either, Mr. Daley.
