at Alaskan hotel

ANCHORAGE, Alaska - A disgruntled former employee opened fire in an Anchorage hotel and killed a manager, setting off a fourhour search that ended with the gunman’s arrest, authorities said early Sunday.

Kerry Fadely, 55, died in the shooting that occurred shortly after 6 p.m. Saturday at the Millennium Alaskan Hotel, police spokesman Lt.

Dave Parker said.

Police locked down the hotel and carried out a roomto-room search. Police also surrounded the suspect’s residence.

Victor Rodriguez Flores, 45, was arrested nearly four hours after the shooting near his home in the hotel neighborhood.

Sgt. Joe Masten said the gunman was a disgruntled former employee who had been fired. He said the female manager was shot in a hotel kitchen.

Police said Fadely had been the suspect’s supervisor until his dismissal a week ago.

Rodriguez Flores was charged with first-degree murder, Parker said.

Four aircraft idle 7 hours on tarmac

NEW YORK - Passengers on at least three JetBlue planes and one American Airlines plane say they were stranded on the tarmac of Bradley International Airport near Hartford, Conn., for seven hours or more after being diverted from New York-area airports Saturday.

A passenger on one of the diverted JetBlue planes said the crew ran out of snacks and bottled water for the last few hours of the delay.

Andrew Carter, a reporter for the South Florida Sun Sentinel, said his plane took off from Fort Lauderdale, Fla., for Newark International Airport in New Jersey about 9 a.m. After being diverted to Hartford, Conn., the plane sat on the tarmac between about 1:30 p.m. and 9 p.m., he said.

A representative for Bradley International was not available to comment on the scope of the tarmac delays at the airport.

A JetBlue spokesman, Victoria Lucia, confirmed in an e-mailed statement that six of its planes, carrying about 700 passengers, were diverted to Hartford as a result of a “confluence of events” including infrastructure issues at New York’s John F. Kennedy Airport and Newark International.

She declined to specify how long the planes sat on the tarmac at Bradley, but noted that 17 other flights with different carriers were also diverted to the airport.

Illinois lawmaker: To be ‘vindicated’

KANKAKEE, Ill. - U.S.

Rep. Jesse Jackson Jr. is predicting he’ll be “vindicated” by an ethics investigation into whether he or someone on his behalf offered to raise funds for ex-Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich in return for an appointment to President Barack Obama’s vacated Senate seat.

“Let me be clear. I believe in the American system of justice,” Jackson, a Democrat, said Saturday at a Kankakee County NAACP dinner. “The process is continuing, but in the end I believe I will be vindicated.”

The House Ethics Committee announced earlier this month that it would resume a probe that began before Blagojevich’s trial.

Jackson, who has not been charged, has repeatedly denied wrongdoing.
