Guatemalan man drowns in Arkansas rock quarry

— Authorities say a 28-year-old man has drowned at a rock quarry near Mayflower.

Maj. Andy Shock told the Log Cabin Democrat the man was swimming with his girlfriend’s three children when he went under the water about 6 p.m. Sunday.

Shock says the children told investigators they turned around and didn’t see him, so they looked for him in the water. After finding him, they tried to pull him out, but couldn't because he was too heavy.

The children ran to their home nearby and called for help. Sheriff’s deputies and rescue crews searched for the man and found him several hours later.

The victim’s name wasn’t released.

He is from Guatemala, and his girlfriend told investigators he doesn’t have family members in the United States.
