Bobby Petrino's Harley-Davidson motorcycle following an accident on Sunday.

Arkansas football coach Bobby Petrino was injured in a motorcycle accident Sunday night southeast of Fayetteville.

Arkansas Democrat-Gazette/JASON IVESTER --04/02/12-- Seen on Monday, April 2, 2012, a single tire track extends about 20 yards from Arkansas 16 south ...

— Arkansas head football coach Bobby Petrino was involved in a motorcycle accident Sunday night, according to the Arkansas State Police.

In a release Monday, Petrino's family said he is expected to make a full recovery and was in stable condition, but didn't specify the severity of his injuries.

A source told the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette that Petrino suffered multiple broken ribs, "all kinds of cuts and bruises", and a neck sprain.

The crash was reported around 6:45 p.m. Sunday night on Arkansas 16 in Madison County near Crosses, a rural community about 23 miles southeast of Fayetteville. With its winding roads and picturesque views of the Boston Mountains, the area is popular among bikers.

Bob Kramer came upon the crash scene around 7:05 p.m. on Sunday, but said Petrino was already gone and no police were on-hand. Kramer said the Harley-Davidson had a custom Razorback paint job.

"The bike was on top of some timber, but nothing real big - maybe 4 inches in diameter," Kramer said. "It ended up resting basically upright, at a little bit of an angle.

"The road kind of has a little rise on it and then bends around to the left over a hill. The bike just kind of went straight up over the crest of that hill. It could have been anything that caused it."

An Arkansas State Police report on the incident might not be available for two or three days, but spokesperson Bill Sadler said it was a single-vehicle crash that happened when Petrino's motorcycle left the roadway.

According to Sadler, Petrino was taken to a hospital in Washington County, where he was admitted and kept overnight. Sadler didn't specify whether Petrino was wearing a helmet at the time of the accident.

Petrino was not listed as a patient at any of the major hospitals in Northwest Arkansas on Monday, but patients can ask their name be withheld from a hospital's roster, citing the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA).

UA athletics director Jeff Long said in a release on Monday afternoon he had visited with Petrino in the hospital and, "Coach Petrino is resting comfortably and is encouraged by the progress of his recovery."

Petrino, 51, is entering his fifth year as the Razorbacks' football coach. He is an avid motorcycle collector and had four when he spoke about his hobby during a 2008 interview with Northwest Arkansas Newspapers.

"It's relaxing to me," Petrino said in the interview. "You get out and you get to see good scenery, and I like to ride up to Beaver Lake. It's pretty up there. I've been around the outdoors. I grew up around the outdoors my whole life."

Wonder if he was wearing a helmet? Hope so. Sure would be a great example for the young folk out there who think they are invincible.

Roostermom's comment was inappropriate considering the circumstances. Let's send positive thoughts the Petrino's way - not jokes.

I cannot for the life of me figure out why anyone would post a negative comment on an article like this....Praying for a full recovery for Bobby Petrino and want his family to know that there are many thoughts and prayers going out for all of them today.

from one rider to another, prayers sent your way for a speedy recovery. roostermom your comment is so inappropriate here and imo anywhere else when now days more women and men own and ride motorcycles then ever. I am female, got ran over by a car, my bike was totaled and 2 years later I AM UP AND RIDING AGAIN!

I'm sure the coach will make a speedy recovery.
What is suspect is the statement from the family, "Our family appreciates the respect for our privacy during the recovery,"
What happened with this accident, that they need privacy? Sooooooo many questions....... Evidently no answers as of yet.

I've been riding a motorcyle all my life and tho I wasn't there, usually when it is a one vehicle accident like that, it's an indication that he possibly was riding faster than he should. Harleys are great motorcyles but they do have their limits in curves and such that these crotch rockets don't have.

@T6: Your "suspect" line is standard publicist-speak for "please don't bother me"; you see it in celebrity press releases all the time. He simply doesn't want sports reporters camped out in & around his hospital--even though stating it's in Washington County practically narrows it down to two (surely he's NOT in the women's hospital ;) ). Coach Petrino needs our prayers right now, NOT a swarm of reporters.

Geez. Bunch of panties in a wad. Rooster's comment was benign at best. But the point that poster was making stands: motorcycles are f'n dangerous. Of course, my brother-in-law was nearly killed on his motorcycle. And two family friends lost their children via motorcycles. Oh, and none of them were at fault in their respective accidents either.
.
However, I do hope Petrino gets better & I also hope he dumps the bike.

As av avid HD rider myself, i wish BP a speedy recovery. NoUserName, motorcyles are not f'n dangerous. Some riders are careless and drivers of OTHER vehicles are sometimes blind to them and pull out in front of motorcycles frequently. I am a much safer driver on a bike than in a car. Because of drivers of cars. It is like saying guns are dangerous. I like them too, by the way. Careless people are the problem, not the machines.

NHTSA statistics seem to show that fatality rates per 100,000 vehicles are much higher for motorcycles than passenger cars. Besides, you may be the best biker in the work. Doesn't mean s**t when somebody turns left right in front of you. You stand a much higher chance of survival in a car. Simple physics, man.

SBA1960 says... April 2, 2012 at 10:13 p.m.

NoUserName,
So what is dangerous? The bike or the jerk that turns left in front of you because they didn't see you on an 800 lb steel object with at least one headlight on? f Someone runs over you with their car while you are in a crosswalk does that mean walking is dangerous? The odds of dying are much greater on foot than in a car when struck by a car. Simple logic man. Stop blaming objects for the actions of people. In any case, I hope Bobby Petrino is OK and recovers quickly.

NoUserName, Boy you got that right. My cousin and his wife were riding and a car stopped in front of them suddenly, he lost control it threw them both off and killed her, banged him up good. They had been riding for years and had ridden all over the US.
Experience helps but there's always that one time and hopefully it's not the last.

NoUserName says... April 2, 2012 at 10:30 p.m.

SBA, NHTSA statistics back me up. Motorcycles are the most dangerous vehicle to drive. That is fact, I'm afraid. They make up 2% of the vehicles on the road and 10% of the accidents. Besides, cars and peds don't generally share the same roadway - crosswalks notwithstanding. Bikers and cars do. But whatever. You're a biker. Of course you're going to fight tooth and nail to try and discredit me. Whatever.
.
T6, sorry to hear that.

SBA1960 says... April 2, 2012 at 11:32 p.m.

NoUserName,
Whatever? Sounds like what my teenagers used to say when they disagreed. I have seen the 2005 stats that you are quoting. There is no question that one is more likely to die if hit by a car on a motorcycle than by a car in a car. Probably a higher percentage now. The number is ever increasing because the number of bikes is ever increasing. About half of the deaths (44%) in the 2005 study do not involve a second vehicle. Someone not paying proper attention, dodging animals or going too fast into a turn. Over a quarter were not licensed to drive a bike. Many were speeding or intoxicated or both. As with any vehicle, the operator has a responsibility to operate the vehicle safely. And yes, no matter how much experience that you have riding, some car may run you over and kill you tomorrow. That is the remaining 56%. Experience sometimes breeds complacency. It does not equate to safe behavior and sometimes means more risk taking. It is up to you, the operator, to be safe all the time. Period. The motorcycle crash is certainly not as likely to kill you as an airplane crash. The people flying airplanes are well trained, licensed, sober and very attentive most of the time. When they break the rules, people can die (and have) quickly.
My point is this. People are dangerous. Almost every vehicle fatality of any kind is caused by the actions of people. You said that yourself. Not their fault. Someone turns left in front of you. If you want to be safe doing anything, the behavior of the people doing it must be safe. Otherwise accidents will happen. Goes for roller skates, skydiving and anything in between. Not disagreeing with stats or that you are more likely to die in a crash on a motorcycle than in a car. I just don't agree that we should blame the machine.
