— UA receiver Whitehurst charged with possession

FAYETTEVILLE - Arkansas freshman receiver Kane Whitehurst was arrested early Sunday by University of Arkansas police and charged with misdemeanor possession of marijuana.

Whitehurst, 19, was booked into the Washington County Detention Center at 6:48 a.m. and posted a $1,320 bond for possession of a controlled substance and possession of drug paraphernalia. Whitehurst, from Alpharetta, Ga., faces a hearing today and April 30 court date in Fayetteville District Court.

Arkansas Coach Bobby Petrino said through a university spokesman he was aware of Whitehurst’s arrest and “the situation would be handled appropriately.”

Whitehurst’s arrest was the second of an Arkansas football player since spring practices began and the fifth in the past two years. Petrino suspended starting offensive lineman Jason Peacock indefinitely following his arrest on March 16 on a felony theft of property charge.

The UAPD incident report states that Whitehurst was arrested after an officer responded to a call at 3:39 a.m. from an unknown street sweeper who reported that a motorist was squealing his tires and speeding in the Garland Avenue parking garage.

The officer wrote that a black BMW sport utility vehicle passed him going 25 mph in a 10 mph zone at the garage and he pulled the vehicle over.

According to the report, the officer “smelled burnt marijuana emitting [from] the vehicle,” and that he found “a pipe, grinder and a small baggie of marijuana” in a search of the BMW.

Whitehurst, who played on a state champion Chattahoochee (Ga.) High School team in 2010, redshirted for the Razorbacks last season.
