$4.5M spent in Texas FLDS prosecution

— State records obtained by The Associated Press show Texas prosecutors have spent more than $4.5 million convicting polygamist sect leader Warren Jeffs and 10 of his followers.

Tuesday marks the four-year anniversary of the April 3, 2008, raid on the Yearning for Zion Ranch. State prosecutors last week convicted the last of 11 members of the polygamist group who were arrested on child sex abuse and bigamy charges.

Spokesman Jerry Strickland said Tuesday the manpower the case required makes it the largest ever under Texas Attorney General Greg Abbott.

Combined with the costs surrounding the 2008 raid, state records show the total price tag across all agencies is nearly $20 million.

Jeffs leads the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. He was sentenced to life in prison.
