Trial reset for Union County man accused in girl’s death

— The trial of a man charged with capital murder in the death of an 18-month-old child has been delayed.

A Union County Circuit Court judge issued a continuance Tuesday in the case of Desmond Evans, who is accused in the Aug. 12 death of Cheris Samuels. The trial is now set for Aug. 20.

The El Dorado News-Times reports that defense attorney, Rickey Hicks, told Judge Hamilton Singleton that he hadn’t received recent evidence pertaining to the case.

Investigators say Evans had been watching Cheris while her mother attended a class when Cheris reportedly stopped breathing. She was pronounced dead at a hospital.

An autopsy report determined the child’s death to be a homicide.
