Two high school students will travel to New York this summer to receive awards for their photographs.

Katie Neilson, 17, and Alyssa Blakeney, 17, of Jonesboro High School won two rounds of art competitions and will receive gold medals at Carnegie Hall June 1.

"They are two of the hardest working students that we have in the art department," David Leggett, an art teacher at Jonesboro High School, said. "They do not strive for completion of a project, they strive for a better understanding of the process and for the creation of a piece of work that they could be proud of."

The students competed in the Mid-South Scholastic art competition, and then qualified for the national competition, where they won gold medals.

They are the only two students from Arkansas to receive medals, according to their art teacher.
