COMMUNITY EVENTS IN THE RIVER VALLEY AND OZARK AREA

— MONDAY Arkansas Tech Plant Sale RUSSELLVILLE - Ferns, geraniums, hanging baskets and azaleas will be among the items available for purchase from 1-4 p.m. Monday, the last day of the 29th annual Arkansas Tech Department of Agriculture spring plant sale. TODAY Live from the Met Series CONWAY - Verdi’s La Traviata will conclude the 2011-12 season of Captured Live from the Met at the University of Central Arkansas at 2 p.m.

The opera, sung in Italian with Met titles in English, German and Spanish, will be aired in high definition in the Donald W. Reynolds Performance Hall at UCA. Running time is approximately two hours, 35 minutes. General admission tickets are $15 for the public and $5 for students with a valid ID. Art Exhibit Reception RUSSELLVILLE - A reception will be held from 1-3 p.m.

at the River Valley Arts Center, 1001 East B St., for an exhibit that showcases creative efforts of young Arkansas artists in seventh through ninth grades at Pottsville Junior High School. The students’ art will be on exhibit through April.

MONDAY Oak Ridge Boys Concert CONWAY - The Oak Ridge Boys will perform at 7:30 p.m.

at the Donald W. Reynolds Performance Hall to close this season’s University of Central Arkansas Public Appearances’ Nostalgia Series. TUESDAY AND WEDNESDAY Lectures and Reading CONWAY - Novelist Tom Franklin and poet Beth Ann Fennelly will be on the University of Central Arkansas campus Tuesday and Wednesday as part of the Artist-In-Residence program. Both authors will give lectures from 2:40-3:55 p.m. Tuesday in Winfred Thompson Hall. Franklin will lecture on writing fiction in Room 331, and Fennelly will lecture on writing poetry in Room 104. Fennelly and Franklin will give a joint reading at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday in the College of Business Auditorium, Room 107. On Wednesday, two lectures will be held in Winfred Thompson Hall, Room 331. Fennelly will lecture on writing creative nonfiction at 10 a.m., and Franklin will lecture on writing illustrative narrative works at 11 a.m. All events are free and open to the public. THURSDAY Jazz Ensemble Concert CONWAY - The University of Central Arkansas’ last jazz ensemble concert for the semester will be at 7:30 p.m. in the Snow Fine Arts Recital Hall at UCA. The free event is open to the public. The program will start with the UCA Dixieland Band, under the direction of Jackie Lamar, focusing on traditional New Orleans jazz from the 1920s. Jazz Ensemble II, under the direction of Christian Carichner, will explore the rise of the big-band era of the 1940s-’60s. UPCOMING Summer Food Program Applications RUSSELLVILLE - The Russellville Salvation Army will accept applications for the 2012 Summer Food 4 Kids program from 9 a.m. to noon and 1-5 p.m. April 23 at the Corps office, 1004 Weir Road. Applicants must provide a photo ID, proof of residency (a utility bill), proof of income (such as disability, SSI, paycheck stubs, etc.) and the current grade and school of each child in the home. To donate food or money to the Summer Food 4 Kids program, call the Russellville Salvation Army at (479) 968-5358.

Cajun Feast MORRILTON - Sacred Heart School will hold an all-you-can eat Cajun feast at 5:30 p.m. April 28 in the school gym. The menu will include boiled crawfish, shrimp, chicken, gumbo, chicken, coleslaw, potatoes and corn. Autism Awareness Fundraiser PLAINVIEW - Yell! for Autism Awareness will be held in downtown Plainview at 10 a.m. April 28. The event will feature booths with information about autism services, as well as live entertainment, supervised children’s play areas, awareness merchandise and more. All proceeds will benefit individuals affected by autism spectrum disorders in Yell County school districts.
