Dr. Calvin Johnson will serve as interim chancellor for the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff, beginning May 29.
Johnson, the former dean of the university's college of education, has worked in education for more than 30 years. He will stand in for Dr. Lawrence Davis, Jr., who will retire in May, while the university searches for a permanent replacement.
“As a graduate of UAPB and having served on the faculty for almost 20 years, I have a firm understanding of the important role the university plays in our community and state,” Johnson said in a news release. “I’m excited about the opportunity to serve in this capacity and help bridge the transition to a new chancellor.”
Johnson also worked in the Arkansas House of Representatives from from 1998 to 2004. He will resign from the Arkansas Higher Education Coordinating Board before becoming interim chancellor.
He said he will not be a candidate for the permanent position.
