International journalist to lecture at Hendrix

— Hendrix College will host best-selling author Ahmed Rashid, a leading journalist on Pakistan, at 7 p.m. Thursday in Mills A auditorium in the Wilbur Mills Building.

Rashid’s public lecture, “Pakistan on the Brink: The Future of America, Pakistan, and Afghanistan,” will be followed by a book-signing and reception in the Mills Library.

Rashid is the bestselling author of Taliban and appears frequently on NPR’s Fresh Air. He is a regular columnist for the Financial Times, The Washington Post, BBC online, etc.

Descent into Chaos is now one of the standard reference books on the region’s recent history, and he is still the world’s leading authority on the Taliban.

His latest book, Pakistan on the Brink: The Future of America, Pakistan, and Afghanistan will be the focus of his discussion at Hendrix.

In the book, Rashid addresses concerns about the current state of Pakistan, the ramifications of the U.S. exit from Afghanistan, the possibilities of negotiating with the Taliban, the key points about the neighboring states and the questions to keep in mind over the coming year and through the 2012 presidential election.

For more information on Rashid’s appearance at Hendrix, contact Alan Eastham, senior fellow in international relations and international programs at Hendrix, at (501) 505-1502 or eastham@hendrix.edu.

Rashid’s appearance in Arkansas is underwritten by the support of the W.C. Buthman Endowed Visiting Scholar and Lectureship Program.
