A state trooper shot and killed a Washington County man last night after he attempted to overpower the trooper, Arkansas State Police said.

Michael Bowman was on patrol in an area five miles north of Alma in Crawford County when he made a traffic stop for a speed violation around 11:30 p.m., according to the report.

The driver, Christopher Wayne Snyder, 28, of Winslow, stopped the vehicle and ran away. The trooper chased him on foot for a quarter of a mile to the backyard of an abandoned mobile home.

Snyder refused to comply with the trooper's orders, and when the trooper tried to place handcuffs on him, Snyder started to choke the him, the report said. The trooper reached his handgun and shot Snyder. Snyder was pronounced dead at the scene.

The trooper is on administrative leave, pending the review of the incident, the report said.
