— Arkansas has hired John L. Smith as its new interim head football coach, the school announced Monday.

Smith agreed to a 10-month deal worth $850,000. He will be introduced at a 2 p.m. press conference on Tuesday.

Smith, 63, was hired as head coach at his alma mater Weber State in December after spending three seasons as special teams coach for the Razorbacks. His most previous head coaching stints came at Louisville (1998-2002) and Michigan State (2003-06).

“I am tremendously excited to have this special opportunity to return to Arkansas and lead the Razorback football program,” Smith said in a release announcing the hire. “During my coaching career, I have always been dedicated to developing student-athletes to their fullest potential. In the last couple of weeks, I came to the realization I could provide guidance and stability to a program I’m extremely invested in.

"While at Arkansas, we worked to make the Razorbacks a top five team and much of the credit for that goes to the student-athletes. Throughout the spring, the assistant coaches and student-athletes have shown incredible focus and character, which we will use to build on as we work to achieve our goals for 2012."

Smith has knowledge of the Razorbacks' players and staff. Eight of Arkansas' nine full-time assistant coaches have worked with Smith in the past. UA athletics director Jeff Long said Saturday continuity for the current team would be important when deciding on an interim coach.

In 18 seasons as a head coach, Smith has a 132-86 record.

“When Coach Smith first approached me about returning to Arkansas to serve in this position, he talked about his desire to be a part of the continued success of these student-athletes, this coaching staff and the Razorback program," Long said. "He has been a part of the record-breaking success we have enjoyed in the past few seasons."

Weber State athletics director Jerry Bovee said the decision for Smith to leave the school was surprising.

“We knew when we hired John L. as our head football coach that we were getting a high-profile coach that we felt would move our program forward”, Bovee said. “Obviously, the timing of this announcement is problematic but at this point we are going to move forward in making decisions that are in the best interest of our program.”

Arkansas fired Bobby Petrino on April 10 after it was discovered he hired Jessica Dorrell to a football staff position without disclosing a previous extramarital relationship between the two. Petrino went 34-17 in four seasons at Arkansas, winning 21 games in his last two seasons.

Petrino was an offensive coordinator for Smith at Louisville and took over as head coach there when Smith left for Michigan State following the 2002 season.

Long knew the avaiable coaching pool wasn't very deep and he needed to find someone quick. I would have selected Paul Petrino at least for the short-term. Living in Illinois as I do now, I know a lot of people were unhappy that Paul Petrino resigned after Zook was fired from the U of I. I hope I am wrong, but this is not a really great selection.

Got to say, I could hardly be less disappointed in this move. I know the pool was shallow but we have more appealing coaches on staff than this. To get an older stop gap coach is understandable. I just wish long would've posessed enough influence amongst the coaching community to come up with better than this. This had better be a one year deal then we must back up the brinks truck and hire a coach to allow us to maintain significance in the sec. Could not be more upset at petrino for putting hog nation through this

It's a 10 month contract.

Cannot understand him leaving Weber State, his alma mater,to come back for a 10 month contract. There has to be more to this story than we are hearing right now.

HawgFan says... April 23, 2012 at 3:36 p.m.

I believe he was planning on retiring after a couple years at Weber State anyway. Why not go ahead and make that money in one year instead of 2 or 3 and retire a winner.

This makes complete sense to me. If he named one of the acting assistants, and they won 10 or 11 games, with a group that should win that many with almost anyone as coach, he would have been hard pressed not to give them the nod, this way, John L Smith is gone after the season and we go get a big name coach, or one of the assistants at that time if they are the right person for the job, but like i said, this way he isn't forced into hiring the assistant after a spectacular season.

ORANGEBEACHHOG says... April 23, 2012 at 3:46 p.m.

Yeah that makes sense HawgFan and who knows he might get to hang around after this season in some capacity with the athletic department and retire in the area. One thing this does allow is a specified amount of time for the staff to focus on coaching for this season but as others have mentioned it leaves recruiting up in the air for 2013. Of course we have been down that road a few times before.

Jfish says... April 23, 2012 at 3:53 p.m.

Why not just let Paul Petrino run it for a year? The team is built around the offense.

LevyRat says... April 23, 2012 at 4:01 p.m.

If you had made Paul Petrino or Taver Johnson the interim, they would be hard to replace after a successful season. With this hire you are not stuck with an interim who you can't let go so that you can hire a great coach.

Dellmann says... April 23, 2012 at 4:09 p.m.

I'm sure there's some serious thought behind this. Short term interim contract makes sense. Doubt anybody with the "P" last name would be tapped for head coach right now, although Paul certainly isn't implicated in any of the Bobby shenanigans. Just don't think anybody's ready for another Petrino as head coach right now.

Great choice - HawgFan we had the best special teams in the country - you must be thinking of WIlly Robinson - Smith has major college head coach experience and I'm sorry but the cupboard was bare - yes we have fine folks on staff but none with HC experience

Packman says... April 23, 2012 at 6:28 p.m.

Jeff Long hits another one out of the park. There was no way Long could have hired a "name" coach and an interim was the only real option. Smith knows the players, assistant coaches, the system, and has a great reputation with high school coaches. Why leave Weber State? Smith will make 4 times the salary and will surely be placed into a cush admin job with the football team after the new coach is hired. Go Hogs!

hogwildcat says... April 23, 2012 at 6:51 p.m.

Yeah don't do special teams they only scored 6 touchdowns this year. Oh, and while he was here he couldn't recruit a bit. NOT! He will do a great job and is a perfect interim having worked on staff but no longer here. Now you don't have to worry about creating jealousies after selecting one that is there. Everyone can do their job that they were hired to do. I say quit griping and be a real Hog fan and support the players. This is what they wanted and it will work out. WPS!!!!!!!

His experience as H.C. and his recent time at UA bring stability, and as some posts above say, it will be easy to replace him after this season. Anyway, UA should be able to stay at # 3 in the West behind LSU and Alabama.

HawgFan says... April 24, 2012 at 8:39 a.m.

You're right guys. I'm sure John L. Smith taught Dylan Breeding how to punt and showed Joe Adams all those moves he made the last 3 years!! Get real. We had a major special teams break down almost every game that cost us in some way. A 92 yard punt return for a touchdown by LSU, a 55 yard kick return by South Carolina... I could go on and on. We were not #1 in the nation, by the way, in Special Teams. I like the hire on an interim basis, I have no problem with it at all, but I stand by my statement that I don't want him coaching special teams. Players like Joe Adams don't come around every day.
