Work starts on I-40 widening project between NLR, Conway

— Interstate 40 between Little Rock and Conway is being widened to six lanes, and state highway officials say the work will take years to complete.

The 23-mile project will cost nearly $135 million. The first phase of 8 miles on the Conway end is already under construction.

Officials say most of the work will take place in the median, which won’t require lane closures.

Some temporary lane closures will take place as crews replace bridges along the route near Lake Conway and U.S. 64 in Conway. But officials say the highway will sustain four lanes of traffic almost all the time, with lane shifts moving the traffic away from the work areas.

Highway officials are asking drivers to slow down and be attentive in construction zones.
