SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico — A federal grand jury has indicted 13 alleged members of a Puerto Rican gang known as “The Butchers” who are accused of killing a lawyer during a drive-by shooting.
U.S. Attorney Rosa Emilia Rodriguez says the suspects are charged with five murders, two attempted murders and drug trafficking.
Among the victims in those alleged crimes was attorney Dimaries Broco Irizarry, who was fatally shot when he got caught in a drive-by shooting in March 2011 while driving home.
Prosecutors accuse the suspects of conspiring to possess with intent to distribute crack, cocaine, heroin and marijuana in the northern coastal town of Manati. They also are charged with shipping marijuana to Texas and using profits to buy weapons and ammunition.
Rodriguez made the announcement Thursday.
