ASU accepts invitation to GoDaddy.com Bowl

Arkansas State is booked for a January trip to the Gulf Coast.

The Red Wolves accepted an invitation from the GoDaddy.com Bowl on Sunday to face Kent State in a Jan. 6 meeting at Ladd-Pebble Stadium in Mobile, Ala.

ASU (9-3, 7-1) earned the bid after securing back-to-back Sun Belt Conference championships on Saturday a 45-0 victory against Middle Tennessee at Liberty Bank Stadium in Jonesboro.

Last season, the Red Wolves lost 38-20 to Northern Illinois in the GoDaddy.com Bowl, with the Red Wolves led by an interim coach in David Gunn and only half of the ASU staff intact after Coach Hugh Freeze was hired by Ole Miss.

With a win against Kent State, who is ranked No. 25 in the AP Top 25 poll, the Red Wolves have a chance to secure their first bowl victory since the Pecan Bowl in 1970 and potentially and joining the Football Bowl Subdivision in 1992.

Kent State (11-2) won the MAC East Division, and enters with an efficient offense that finished No. 75 nationally (391.1 yards per game) but averaged 34.6 points per game.

The Golden Flashes, though, tout a solid ground attack, ranking No. 17 in the NCAA at 228.3 yards per game. Junior running back Dri Archer ranks No. 16 nationally with 1,352 yards and 15 touchdowns on 150 carries, while sophomore Trayion Durham ranks 23rd with 1,248 yards and 14 touchdowns on 256 carries.
