Boy, 7, shot to death at Pennsylvania gun store, police say

By The Associated Press

This article was published December 8, 2012 at 2:19 p.m.

Authorities say a 7-year-old boy was shot to death when a gun accidentally went off as his father was getting into his truck outside a western Pennsylvania gun store.

The boy was shot Saturday morning at Twigs Reloading Den in East Lackawannock Township, 60 miles north of Pittsburgh. Store owner Leonard Mohney says it happened in the parking lot.

The Pittsburgh Tribune-Review reports that the boy was shot when his father’s handgun went off as the man got into the truck while holding the gun.

Police say 44-year-old Joseph V. Loughrey told them he had emptied the magazine but didn’t realize a bullet was still in the chamber. Seven-year-old Craig Allen Loughrey was shot in the chest and died at the scene.

State police are investigating the shooting as an accident.

Packman and Harley ,

This is why I don't like guns. One is more likely to shoot a family member than a criminal.

This little boy may be dead, but aren't you glad we can buy as many guns as we want and act stupid with them???? Lots of things screwed up with this country, but as long as we have our 2d amendment rights, thats all that really matters - just being able to buy guns and ammo and shoot stuff. How can you not feel good about that. Lots of folks get killed by guns in america, but we should feel good about that to because we can just buy the guns and the ammo and it makes us feel so good to be able to do that. I mean, come on. Isn't it great!!!!!

Populist and glenm - How dare you use the tragic death of an innocent little boy to make a political point. Shame, shame, shame. Do you feel the same about automobiles, carnival rides, bicycles, skateboards, and horses? Thousands of innocent children die each year in related accidents. Prayers for the family.

It is unfortunate this youngster's dad failed to follow one important rule: always clear the firearm to be sure there isn't a round in the chamber!! If anyone is going to handle a firearm it isn't difficult to learn the basic fundamentals of firearm safety; it's just common sense. If you two posters don't like guns, don't buy or own them. Me, I will exercise my right to own a firearm or firearms as set out in our Constitution.

Packman,

Yes. Little people are just so precious. We all must be so careful with dangerous objects. While I permit my children to ride bikes and ride in cars, guns are out of the question.

What a idiot, these are the type of people that should be sterlized so they can't reproduce more idiots. It says he was getting in the car, which leads one to assume he was in the store and left with a loaded handgun. Is is too bad the founding fathers didn't require a sanity test for the second admendment rights.

Earlier this month in Minnesota, a four-year-old shot a two-year-old to death.

Can you imagine how much celebrating there must be at Wayne LaPierre's house these days? Merry Christmas, Mr. L!
