It has been discovered that Homer Wilson, manager of the Hotel Marion, wears a pedometer. As Mr. Wilson is not an actor or in the show business and does not need to attract free advertising through the press, he has been frequently asked why he has strapped this metallic instrument to his ankle. Mr. Wilson last night modestly admitted he sometimes wears a pedometer, which he bought out of curiosity and to settle a bet. He bet himself he walked at least 100 miles a day in the corridor, halls and basement of the hotel. While he lost the bet he found he covers considerable ground. A record for eight days showed he walked an average of 11 miles a day.

50 YEARS AGO Dec. 9, 1962 HOT SPRINGS - The clamor for legalized gambling is growing louder here as a federal grand jury prepares to open a special session in Fort Smith Tuesday to determine if Hot Springs casinos are complying with the 1961 Kennedy gambling laws. Byrum Hurst of Hot Springs already has indicated a proposal for state-supervised and state-taxed gambling may be introduced in the 1963 Legislature.

25 YEARS AGO Dec. 9, 1987 WASHINGTON - President Reagan and Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev took “a small but very important first step” by signing a treaty eliminating U.S. and Soviet medium- and shortrange nuclear missiles, Sen. Dale Bumpers, D-Ark., said Tuesday. The six members of the state’s congressional delegation were, in fact, unanimous in their praise of the intermediate-range nuclear forces (INF) treaty and their calls for further action to limit the number of strategic (long-range) nuclear weapons.

10 YEARS AGO Dec. 9, 2002

The state Highway Commission has made a $7.4 million down payment on its commitment to build a new interstate in northeast Arkansas. The figure was the low bid on a project to construct an interchange on U.S. 63 at Arkansas 149 in Marked Tree.
