Lonoke police are investigating the theft of copper wire from a local church undergoing construction, the sheriff's office said in a news release.

The theft at New Beginning Mission Church on Arkansas 294 was reported to the sheriff's office about 8:41 a.m. Wednesday, but authorities said the copper could have been stolen any time since Sunday.

Police said they think the thieves entered through the church's rear door and stripped the wiring from the framework of an extension being built onto the structure.

The loss is estimated at $2,500, according to the release.
