Tractor-trailer hits car on I-40; passenger killed

— A passenger was killed and a driver hurt Tuesday after a tractor-trailer crashed into their car and pushed it into another tractor-trailer, authorities said.

The accident happened about 12:30 p.m. on Interstate 40 in Prairie County, closing the highway in both directions for some time.

Arkansas State Police say it happened as a 1993 Ford Escort driven by Justin M. Jackson, 39, of Fayetteville, was stopped behind a 2012 International tractor-trailer in a westbound construction zone.

A second 2012 International tractor-trailer then failed to stop, rear-ending the Escort and forcing it into the trailer of the first truck, according to a preliminary report. Police say a third tractor trailer, a 2013 Freightliner, then rear-ended the first truck that didn't stop.

Jackson was transported to UAMS Medical Center in Little Rock with unspecified injuries. His condition wasn't immediately known.

A passenger in the Escort identified as Kristin G. Jackson, 33, of Fayetteville, was pronounced dead at the scene.

None of the truck drivers was injured.
